ADULTS & SENIORS: Who We Are

People For A Healthy Community (PHC)

People for a Healthy Community (PHC) has been serving our community for over 20 years. We support members of our community by providing programs and services that reduce social isolation, improve access to support services, and build reliance. We have three main program focuses

  1. Food – see below.

  2.  Seniors Outreach, Supports and Exercise programs – see below.

  3.  Mental Health and Wellness.


ALL of the programs rely on volunteers.  Our part-time staff provide planning, training, and logistical supports.


We have over 200 volunteers, some helping once every 6 weeks, some helping once a week for 4 hours, some helping once a week for 1 hour  mostly in team settings, and include such things as preparing food, talking to participants, helping with senior activity, or helping out on one of our committees raising funds, helping with maintenance or contributing on either the finance or human resource committees.


Our Board of Directors also looks for those who want to participate.  Some of the many opportunities are listed below.

Stepping Up Stepping Out Program (PHC)

Day activity program for seniors, includes social time, lunch, exercise class, activities for mental and social stimulation. Mondays, 11:30am – 2:30pm, Rollo Centre.


Work as part of a team to: 
•    Assist with room set-up 
•    Prepare food and serve lunch
•    Socialize with seniors  
 Time Requirement:  Minimum of 3-4 hrs at each program, at least 1 Monday per month

Seniors Monthly Luncheon (PHC)

Social luncheon with entertainment and guest presenters. 
Fourth Thursday of every month. Volunteers needed between 8:30am – 12:30pm monthly or can be casual “as-needed” At Rollo Centre
Work as part of a team to:
•    Assist with room set-up and take down
•    Serve lunch 
•     Assist seniors with mobility issues

Peer Led Exercise Program (PLEP)

Circuit style exercise program for people managing chronic health conditions. 
Mon - Fri, 11am – 12pm
Volunteer leaders needed between 10:50am –12:10pm to: 
•    Assist with set-up and take-down of equipment
AND/OR:
•    Become an  Exercise Leader - supervise classes and lead group exercises provided by the Program Coordinator.     
•    Exercise leaders will be given a program orientation and attend a half day training session.
•     They should be fit and have good communication skills. Experience leading groups is an asset.  

 
Time Requirement: At least 1 class per week for a minimum of 3 months

PHC Food Programs

Various food programs include soup socials (lunches), food bank, school hot lunches, elementary students learning to grow food, food recovery (reclaiming unsold produce from the store).

Gabriola Auxiliary for Island Health Care

Our mandate is to raise funds for other not for profit organizations to operate health related projects.

Volunteers needed in the following programs that we run:


The GABE Shop, a “Boutique” thrift shop, Ice Cream Cart, scoopers for our ice cream season, May long weekend to after Thanksgiving


Meals on Wheels: drivers needed for delivery of meals


Drivers to Doctors: drivers needed to drive people to medical appointments on Gabriola.


The Auxiliary also needs volunteers for events, handy person for general maintenance around the shop, bookkeeping backup and other general tasks in the running of the Auxiliary.

Gabriola Lions Club

A group of friends that know how to have fun serving our community!

We help in emergencies eg. Fire. Gabriola students - bursary's and scholarships. Funding for Seniors.


Support for Community Organizations like PHC, Hope Centre, Gabriola Health Care, Christmas Food Vouchers for families in need. Youth Programs, 4H, Gathering Place, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts. Assist PAC. Special Equipment for Medical purposes. Firewood for people in need. Assist School Library. Labour and Funding for many local projects. And many other activities eg: Concert on the Green, Pancake Breakfast, & Christmas Hampers.  


Become a Lion Member/Volunteer with other Lions that have dedicated themselves to helping others in need and by doing so we give back to our community.

Gabriola Welcome Wagon

Gabriola Welcome Wagon helps to make newcomers to Gabriola feel at home and to introduce them to Island businesses through a basket of gifts and gift certificates​ and provides information  about all the services and activities that make Gabriola such a wonderful place to live.

Elly Hallam,  as  the Welcome Wagon rep, ​has an occasional need for volunteers to help her greet the guests on the day that the newcomers' gatherings are held.
